Neely Scores First Win At PowerCom

Beaver Dam, Wis., May 7-Matt Neely scored his first career USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car Series victory Saturday Night at the Raceway at PowerCom Park. The 21-year old driver from Robinson, Ill. led all 30-laps on the 1/3-mile clay oval.


The event was slowed twice in the first two laps for stalled cars on the track. Neely easlily pulled away from the field, and began lapping the tail of the field by the ninth lap. Neely held a two second lead at the midway point over Tom Hessert, and Levi Jones. After Tracy Hines stalled on the track bunching up the field on the 17th lap. One lap later Davey Ray hit the third turn wall and flipped, causing a red flag.


On the restart Jones challenged Neely several times but couldn't pull off the pass.    On the final lap Jones using the high line attempted a pass entering turn three at the same time Neely hit a rut losing his car to lose speed,and made contact with Jones. Both cars continued with Neely crossing the line two car lengths in front. It marked the second straight year Jones placed second in the event at the track. Dave Darland, Darren Hagen and Jerry Coons Jr. who spun on the second lap recovered to complete the top five.
