Beaver Dam, WI – June 21, 2008.
The racing was fantastic Saturday night at Charter
Raceway Park in Beaver Dam. At least 5 races were decided at the
checkered flag with first place being decided by merely a number of
feet. Four of the five feature events had repeat winners in 2008
while the Dirt Devils produced a new winner for the current season.
The Grand Nationals got off to a rough start as Don Schumacher went
around with just one lap scored complete. There would be just one
more caution on lap eight for an incident between Ross Stalter and
Roger Lee. The rest of the 20 lap event saw Don Sorce Jr, winner of
3 straight feature events this year patiently working his way up
from his 10th position starting spot. Tommy Moore worked past pole
sitter Stalter on lap four using the high side of the speedway.
Sorce used the bottom side to also put Stalter down to third. Moore
decided to stay on the outside while Sorce liked the inside. Moore
was unable to hold off Sorce and Sorce took the lead on lap six.
Following the restart on lap eight for the Stalter/Lee incident,
Sorce pulled away from the field to pick up his fourth straight win.
Moore finished second and Dan Schumacher third.
The Legend cars also produced a repeat winner from last Saturday
night. Brad Weber started the feature in the 10th position but
quickly worked his way up through the field. Lap one belonged to
Brandon Schmitt, but his time at the front was short-lived.
Following a lap two restart after an Aaron Muhle caution, Mike
Mueller to his turn at the front followed by Weber and Schmitt.
Weber got by Schmitt one lap later and would lead through the
checkered flag. However, from position two on back, the action was
hot! Brian Peterson took the second spot away from Mueller around
lap eight and on lap 10, Eric Barth got himself into the top three
right behind Peterson. It took Barth just two laps to pass Peterson
which left him eight laps to try and catch Weber. A yellow on lap 16
bunched the field up behind Weber, but Barth was unable to make a
serious bid for the win and had to settle for second. Third went to
the 22J of Joe Johnson.
It was heartbreak city for Tim Lemirande in the Modified feature.
Lemirande led all but 4 laps and did not win the race. Starting
outside on row two, Lemirande moved up to second behind Kris
Peterson at the end of lap one. Two laps later, Lemirande moved into
the lead followed by the 24Z of Larry Zirbel. Joey Jaeger got into
the mix as he took the third position on lap eight and it looked
like those three might pull away from the rest of the field.
However, when Joel Crowbridge came to a halt in turn three on lap
11, the field got to bunch up with Lemirande at the point. Last
week’s feature winner Craig Priewe and Mitch McGrath got great jumps
on the restart and took over second and third respectively as the
field completed one more circuit. With the lengthy caution period
for Crowbridge, it appeared that Lemirande’s tires had cooled and
didn’t have the handling on the restart working the outside groove
and McGrath and Priewe looked like they would both get past
Lemirande on lap 13. However, Jason Enoch brought out another
caution resetting the field with Lemirande at the front again. On
the restart this time though, McGrath was able to keep his car on
the bottom and took the lead on lap 14. Lemirande’s tires heated up
quickly and his handling returned and he was able to power past
McGrath the following lap. Two more yellows set up a green, white,
checker finish. Lemirande was unable to keep his car on the bottom
in front of McGrath and McGrath slid under Lemirande on the final
lap for the win. Lemirande finished second and Eddie LeMay third.
Jesse Kanas picked up his second feature win of 2008 as he took the
checkered flag first in the Street Stock division. Kanas had his
work cut out for him as he started in the ninth starting position.
Lap number one belonged to Nate Gross who started on the pole. He
was trailed by John Schultz and Brian Gerber. Schultz took the lead
away from Gross on lap four with Gerber and Kanas following in
second and third respectively. At the halfway point it was still
Schultz at the front but Kanas was running second. Three laps later,
Kanas was able to get past Schultz for the lead and held on for the
win. Schultz finished second.
A small field of Dirt Devil cars finished the night off with Matt
Janke taking control on lap number six and never looking back.
Finishing second was Jim Merkel with Kevin Allard rounding out the
top three.
Next week, Charter Raceway Park all five divisions will race again
on Rechek’s Food Pride night. Pits open at 3:30 and the main gates
open at 4:30. Racing is scheduled to start promptly at 6:30. Contact
