Beaver Dam, WI – July 26, 2008.
Several drivers entered the night at Charter Raceway
Park Saturday looking for their third straight A-Main wins. Only one
was successful. Jeremey Schwoch started the evening with a lot of
momentum, having won the last two A-Main races in the Street Stock
division and moving up in the standings to fourth place. Fourteen
other drivers were looking to unseat Schwoch as the Feature began
with Schwoch starting fifth. Lap one belonged to Gordon Schultz but
Schultz spun the following lap in front of the entire field putting
him to the rear. John Schultz inherited the lead with the caution
followed by Schwoch and Joe Brenner. Schultz headed to the pits on
lap four with some problem but would later rejoin the field and
finish tenth. The final yellow came out on lap nine for the car of
Justin Brown coming to a halt on the speedway giving Schwoch a clean
track on the restart. Roger Frank, starting second on the restart
was able to work past Schwoch on lap 14 using a slingshot move
coming out of the corner. Schwoch and Frank would trade the lead
four times over the last five laps with Schwoch beating Frank to the
line on the final circuit to pick up his third straight feature win
and gain a little ground in the points standings. Frank finished a
disappointing second with the points leader, Jesse Kanas, finishing
third.
A full field of 20 Legend cars took the green flag with Tom Fraser
on the pole. Brad Weber, second in the point chase going into the
night’s racing program, started 11th, but used the outside line to
move all the way up to third on lap number two. Weber dropped second
running Robert Lever to third with a nice pass on lap four and used
up just one more lap before taking the lead. Lever followed Weber
past Fraser and was in the second position when disaster struck him
and he spun out just one lap later. Following the restart, Joel
Wyttenbach, looking for his third straight win, looked like he might
challenge Weber for the top spot and was a close second on lap 11
with points leader Eric Barth a close third. The cars got bunched up
again on lap 12 when Grant Greenfield brought out the second and
final caution of the evening. Barth got a great jump on the restart
and went to the inside past Wyttenbach the following lap and was
able to beat Weber to the line on lap 14 and be recorded as the
leader. Weber must have gotten the wake-up call when Barth went past
because he looked like he went into another gear and took the lead
back on lap 15 and never looked back. Barth finished second and
Wyttenbach third.
In the Modified division, Jay Schraufnagel came out of the nights’
racing action as the new points leader in front of Frank Firari and
the previous points leader, Eddie LeMay. He did it by outlasting the
rest of the competitors and picking up his second feature win of the
2008 season. Aaron Rake and Brian Crapser pulled out from the rest
of the field at the drop of the green and put on a great show for
the first four laps. Rake held the lead when Ben Godlewski came to a
halt in turn two on lap four to bring out the caution. On the
restart, Crapser was able to get by Rake when Rake developed a flat
tire and stopped coming out of turn four. Rake was able to stay on
the lead lap when Dennis Krause, Chris Piquette and Dave
Schoenberger crashed before the field was credited with completing
another lap. Schraufnagel powered past Crapser on the ensuing
restart. Tim Lemirande, another driver looking for his third
straight feature win, appeared to have a shot at it when he got past
Crapser on lap 12 and set off after Schraufnagel. Making his first
Charter appearance in 2008, Mike Klenz had no trouble getting used
to the speedway and looked like he would make it a three way battle
for the win when he moved into third on lap 16. Schraufnagel
finished at the top with Lemirande in second. With a late surge,
Dennis Krause was able to take third dropping Crapser to fourth and
Klenz to fifth.
Roger Lee racked up his second straight A-Main win in the Grand
Nationals, but Don Sorce still holds down the top spot in the season
long points battle. It took just three laps for Lee to work past
pole-sitter Will Schumacher for the lead before the yellow came out
for Brian Gerber. On the restart, Don Sorce started in the sixth
position but was on the inside where he likes to run. Over the next
two laps, Sorce picked off Will Schumacher, Dan Schumacher and Nick
Schumacher to move into the third position behind Lee and Troy Weich.
The top three battled for the last 15 laps putting on a fantastic
show for the fans. Lee never relinquished the lead although Sorce
and Weich would swap postions several times. Sorce finished just in
front of Weich picking up second place and Weich finished a
disappointing third. Tommy Moore, who flipped his car earlier in the
evening on the front stretch was able to get his car back together
and finished a very satisfying eighth.
The final event of the night was never in doubt as Steve LeMay went
from starting second right to the lead and led the entire 20 laps.
However, behind LeMay, there was plenty of action from third on back
between Kevin Allard, Aaron Stolp and Jim Merkel. Matt Janke
finished in a solid second place in front of Merkel and Allard.
Next week, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series visits Charter
Raceway Park along with the Legends. Pits open at 3:30 and the main
gates open at 4:30. Racing is scheduled to start promptly at 6:30.
